Porcelain Sculpture

Artists work their vision into reality, starting as unglazed pieces of white ceramic or clay. The artists begin their sculpture with clay, then make it into a plaster mold. Once the mold is dry, the liquid porcelain is poured into it. Once the porcelain is dried and removed from the mold, it is fired in a kiln to solidify. Finally, these delicate sculpture are painted and polished by the artist.

We also have porcelain sculpture, and one of the most celebrated porcelain sculpture artists is Jeff Margolin.

Wood Sculpture

These natural sculptures are carved from wood using various tools and methods. Some artists have preferences for their tools, from chisels to chainsaws; there are many ways to create art. Fallen tree limbs are reimagined, or wooden slabs are combined to create entirely new concepts. Artists can use fire to color the wood naturally or paint for a variety of colors. Lastly, they complete their work with a varnish or finish, whether through cloth rub or painted or sprayed on.

Wood sculptures are among the most common, and Chasen Galleries has great collections. The wood sculptures at Chasen Galleries include the works of Shanti Yard.

Metal Sculpture

A metal sculpture is uniquely designed using any type of metal, from iron pours to welding aluminum or steel. A great deal of strength is put into these designs by heating up the metal, bending it to match their vision, and strategically welding the pieces together using one of three arc welding options; 2 different zig-zag patterns or crescent welding.

Metal sculpture are also very common and popular. Some of the metal sculpture you find at Chasen Galleries include artwork by Zach Gilliland and Alex Kveton.

Innovation in Sculpture

Since the first sculpture in time, art has continued to evolve. Each artist's innovation paves a new road for future artists to branch from.
