Gustavo Vélez: Le dimensioni dell'equilibrio

Pietrasanta, Tuscany

June 11 – September 20, 2026

From June 11 to September 20, 2026, Colombian sculptor Gustavo Vélez presents Le dimensioni dell'equilibrio, a major citywide exhibition in Pietrasanta, Italy — the historic city of marble and one of the international capitals of sculpture.

Organized by the City of Pietrasanta, the exhibition celebrates Vélez's thirty-year artistic relationship with the city, where he arrived in 1996 and established a profound dialogue with the territory, its marble workshops, its bronze foundries, and its tradition of artistic craftsmanship.

Curated by art critic Francesca Sborgi, with the contribution of Eike Schmidt, former Director of the Uffizi Galleries and current Director of Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples, the exhibition brings together marble, bronze, and steel works across some of Pietrasanta's most emblematic public spaces.

The itinerary begins in Piazza del Duomo, where Vélez's sculptures enter into dialogue with the architecture and history of the city, and continues through the Sant'Agostino Complex, Piazza Carducci, Piazza Statuto, Piazza XXIV Maggio, and the Pontile of Marina di Pietrasanta, where the works open toward the Mediterranean light and the horizon of the sea.

At the heart of the exhibition is the idea of equilibrium — not only as a formal condition, but as a structural and poetic principle. Through marble, bronze, and steel, Vélez creates a language of movement, precision, and abstraction, in which geometry becomes organic, and matter appears to float in space.

The exhibition also includes a dialogue with the Museo dei Bozzetti, where the original model of Hipercúbicos, the artist's first abstract work created in Pietrasanta, is part of the museum's permanent collection.

There, Vélez's work stands in relation to the legacy of international masters of sculpture connected to the city.

Le dimensioni dell'equilibrio is both a tribute to Pietrasanta and a significant moment for Latin American sculpture in Europe. It marks three decades of artistic creation between Colombia and Italy, bringing together the rigor of geometry, the sensuality of materials, and the poetic force of public space.
