What's in an appraisal?

An art appraisal is a comprehensive evaluation of a work of art. It is performed to determine the value of a piece, often for taxes, donations, or insurance needs. An appraisal report is issued that details the work being appraised, an evaluation of the current art market, a history of the piece and artist, analysis of comparable works, and supporting professional information. Appraisal reports can be anywhere from ten pages long for a single item to well over one thousand pages for large collections. Because there can be significant implications with the value of a work of art, it is incredibly important to get your appraisal done by a credentialed professional.

Should i get an appraisal?

Are you donating your works, planning your estate, or have insurance needs? Yes, you should get an appraisal report issued by a credentialed appraiser in compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, or USPAP.

Are you just curious about the value of your art? No, you do not need an appraisal report. You can still get one if you'd like one for your records, but it is not necessary if you're looking to sell or are simply curious. In this case a brokers estimate can be issued. Just like the Antiques Roadshow, a range of secondary market values is given. The same valuation and research methods are used to determine this range, though the numbers cannot be used for official purposes, and a smaller report is issued.
