some examples of commissioned portraits
The paintings below are not for sale - rather, they are examples of commissioned portraits. I painted them from source photographs - you can compare the photos and paintings here.

WHY COMMISSION A PORTRAIT? My portraits are small and casual, a nice way to make a photograph more formal and more lasting.
ARE THEY PRINTED OR AI-GENERATED? I hand-paint these portraits start to finish. They are not machine-generated.
DO YOU ALSO PAINT PET PORTRAITS? I paint people and/or animals.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Once I start your portrait, it takes about a week, but if I am working on a number of other portraits, there may be a wait time. Contact me first to find out about wait times if you need the portrait to be finished by a specific date.
DOES THE PORTRAIT PRICE INCLUDE SHIPPING? The price includes shipping to the US., for international orders, I will contact you with a shipping surcharge.
WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE THE PORTRAIT? I will send an image of the finished portrait to you by email. If you don't like it, I keep the portrait and give you a full refund.
DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTS? Subscribe to the email list below to receive discounts at certain times of the year. And in very special cases, I will occasionally paint a portrait for free.

I am an artist and writer, currently painting small oil portraits. At other times I have owned a gallery, run an art center, written art criticism for a Boston weekly and painted large, colorful canvases. I have been fortunate to study with excellent painters such as Barkley Hendricks, Jeremy Foss, William Wegman and Helen Miranda Wilson, and I hold an MFA from Mass Art. I am inspired by the portraits and painting style of Fairfield Porter and I aim for a similar economy of brushstroke. I like to be able to paint recognizable portraits regardless of whether or not the face is featured - if I can do that, I consider the painting a success.
