Wolfgang Ertl

Wolfgang Ertl’s academic background is in the field of literature, but he has also had a lifelong interest in the history and theory of art. He started painting in his youth in Germany, always equally drawn to abstract compositions and representational landscapes.

A professor emeritus at the University of Iowa, he moved to New England in summer 2005 (residing first in York, Maine, and since the end of 2010 in Hampton, NH), and is now devoting almost full time to exploring new possibilities of artistic expression. His paintings have been exhibited in solo and small group shows, and he has participated in various juried exhibitions in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. In recent years he has turned to more or less representational imagined and real landscapes, mostly inspired by the seacoast of New England, Florida, the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and travels in Europe. Pastel has been his favorite medium for years, but he also works with oil and acrylics.
